Centrica Edinburgh

Brise Soleil perfected by the wind.
Optically stunning and safe, this is facade technology at its toughest.
A GIG project that defies wind and weather. The Scottish Gas call centre.

The first project to be completed at a new Technology Centre in Edinburgh was the Centrica Building, which serves as a call centre for Scottish Gas. Following a short tender period, GIG received an order for the design, manufacture and installation of the complete facade, brise soleil system, panelling for the underground car park and also to the plant systems on the roof. As well as a hanging transom-and-mullion facade over three floors with brise sileil, the cotnract also incorporated numerous large areas of louvres, glass and panelling. The main challenge on the project was that the generously dimensioned facade had to withstand the strong Scottish winds. GIG solved this problem by means of a bespoke construction, which was wind tunnel tested, that allowed the secure anchorage of the lightweight brise soleil at 4.5 metre intervals. With this solution GIG again showed its competence as a partner to British customers.
